Here are some of the key categories of competitions out there today in the (aero)space sector: university executive summary competitions, university business plan competitions, prize competitions focused on breakthrough technical/commercial advances (Google Lunar, Lunar Lander, Astronaut Glove, Regolith, General Aviation, Personal Air Vehicle, etc), spaceflight opportunity competitions (such as NASA's efforts to spur new life sciences research by offering winning teams a free flight up to the Space Station), and then there is the European Satellite Navigation competition, and Im not sure where that one fits... :-)

There's a personal air vehicle competition out there today? Which one is that?

We redesign the HLV.
We re use 1995 technology. (OrBetter)
We lift 1,000,000 lbs of hard and software and leave it in orbit.
We re use the rocket casings and fuel tanks.
We lift 6 satellites payloads per launch.
We land 200 paying passengers in a 400,000 lbs CRV.
We attach 6 used rockets together and place the 36 satellites in their respective orbits.

Then we show the world, HotelsInSpace.

My primary interest is space-based biotechnology for medicines -- bio-molecular crystals for structure determination. Without the effect of gravity, making biomolecular crystals have many great advantages, the most being the resolution - possibly down to 2 angstroms. This is excellent resolution. Imagine 1 angstrom! Once the crystal structure is determined by x-ray diffraction, scientists can then use computational chemistry to understand the biochemistry and biophysical chemistry of the crystals. Next computational chemists (one facet of my qualifications learned at Yale for my doctorates) modify the crystals to determine the best structures for the development of novel medicines.

Astrotech, Inc., is one company involved in building this type of commercial entity, thus there is many great opportunities, but like any new business venture - raising capital is the hardest and necessary first step after preparation of a solid business plan.

Spaced based medicine is NOW an excellent field of endeavor!

I thought the members here might find it interesting that a topic discussed at last night's republican presidential debate was (apparently) how the government should fund NASA less but still somehow increase the development of space technology through offering greater prizes:
